Years ago, I met a vintner who wanted to grow her business. After surveying her clients to determine topics of general interest, she discovered winery events were high on their list.
1 Invitation:
First, she sent an invitation to the segment of her client base interested in wine (and probably some others) indicating she would be organizing a sit-down wine tasting. Both clients and spouses were invited from across Geyserville wineries. The event was free, although the price of admission was to bring along another person or couple as their guest.
2 Place:
She found a bed-and-breakfast property with a large gathering room. She set up tables and chairs classroom-style. She had a raffle prize, meaning attendees would fill out registration cards to be eligible for the drawing.
3 Serve:
Each guest had two glasses in front of them (plus a third for the water.) The presenter, who knew something about wine, told them what they were drinking, along with how to judge colour and other attributes.
4 Present yourself:
Midway through, the presenter took a break and the vintner introduced herself and said a few words about why her vinery was different then other Geyserville wineries. The final four wines were presented in pairs. At the end of the event, she had acquired about 20 new clients, this is it.
